If you think planning a wedding is stressful, imagine planning a wedding and a move all at once. That’s what happened when Jessica Stein and her husband, Amit, moved into their new apartment in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn a few short weeks after getting married in early 2019. “It was a little crazy, but we had been engaged and looking for a place to buy for a little over a year,” Jessica says. They had been renting in Manhattan’s Financial District, and when it was time to buy their first home together, Jessica and Amit set their sights on Brooklyn.

When the couple first saw this two-bedroom apartment, they immediately fell in love it. A charming exposed-brick wall, modern amenities and lighting fixtures and lots of natural light from street-facing windows helped seal the deal. “Our dog Ralphie loves a window seat, so when we saw that the apartment has three of them, we knew it was perfect.” It was also a bit of a Brooklyn homecoming for Jessica. “My first apartment when I moved to New York was actually on this same street, so it’s kind of funny that I came back here full-circle,” she says.

Jessica and Amit registered with West Elm for their wedding and had worked with the West Elm Chelsea Design Crew to outfit their last apartment. “I just love how everything’s so apartment-friendly at West Elm and mixes and matches well,” Jessica says. When settling into the new place after tying the knot, they turned to the Design Crew with West Elm Dumbo for another free design consultation and to get new furniture and accessories. “I appreciate that the Design Crew can help with measurements and advise on what can fit in a space, because that’s hard for me to do.” Jennifer Stephan from the West Elm Dumbo Design Crew put the finishing touches on the apartment to make this couple’s first home shine.

Jessica loves brass finishes, so the Design Crew helped her pick out lots of metallic pieces such as the Hudson Steel Shade Floor Lamp, the Drum Storage Coffee Table, the Metal Framed Oversized Round Wall Mirror, vases from the Foundations Collection and metallic planters for plants from Bloomscape. The apartment gets a ton of gorgeous natural light from the three windows in the living room, so at certain times of day, the room really sparkles. “They have such good lighting and we wanted to enhance that, so I love that we added the mirror with the brass above the Audrey Buffet,” Jennifer says.

The Drum Storage Coffee Table is Jessica’s favorite piece. “I loved it so much when I originally saw it online because I love gold, but it was out of stock at the time,” she says. “Jennifer was able to track it down from a store in Georgia for me, which was so amazing!”

Jessica and Amit wanted to be able to entertain in this new home, so they chose pieces that were stylish and had functional storage. Everything they need for game night lives in the coffee table, and they keep extra glasses and dinnerware in the Audrey Buffet by the bar cart, which Amit uses to make cocktails.

Their dog, Ralphie, loves the Shelter Sectional almost as much as his owners do (the couple brought it with them from their previous apartment). The brand-new Silk Stripes Pillows gave the space a colorful refresh for a new season.

The Design Crew added even more life to the space with live plants from Bloomscape. Two large Monsteras, a small Spider plant and a Parlor Palm plant help finish the look.

The Silhouette Pedestal Oval Dining Table with a marble top and antique brass base divides the living room and kitchen. Amit is all about livability and loves the extra-comfortable Orb Dining Chairs. The Worn Velvet Metal fabric goes great with the Shelter Sectional.

“There are a lot of things in the apartment, but I love that it all still feels very light and beautiful,” says Jennifer.
