When most of us think of a shotgun house, we think of a cramped, awkward space that is hard to design well and not very conducive to that open, airy vibe we all gravitate towards. Well, think again! Never heard of this style of home? The shotgun (or “railroad-style”) is a type of narrow rectangular architecture in which each room is arranged one behind the other, with doors at each end of the home. Originally, they were characteristic of Creole neighborhoods in New Orleans. Shotgun houses first began to show up in the early 19th century, peaking in the South from the 1860s all the way through the 1920s. It’s no surprise, then, that these unique homes can still be found in New Orleans, despite ongoing gentrification destruction, thanks for historic preservation efforts in recent years. Many of these homes carry a rich history with original details intact. So when homeowner, Leigh, came upon this shotgun house built in 1914 that had undergone an unfortunate renovation job, she jumped at the opportunity to restore it and have it live up to its history.

The house had been renovated in the ’80s, and we all know what that means: vinyl flooring, and beige beige beige. The renovation covered up the original hardwood floors and antique details, made things dark and drab, and secreted anything of architectural interest with plain drywall. Leigh did the first thing any old-world design fiend would do: tore it all up! Now, the house boasts beautiful original wide-plank wood floors with all the characteristic wear and tear that you just can’t replicate, as well as exposing some treasures hidden behind that aforementioned drywall like an original brick fireplace & chimney (seriously, who would cover that up?). As a final showstopper, she vaulted the ceilings in the living room and finished it off with 200 year-old reclaimed Cypress beams. Swoon.

Once the home itself was restored to their satisfaction, she called in Erin to help with the design and styling. Erin owns Sunny Circle Studio, an interior design company she started after realizing her love of interiors through decorating and designing her own awe-inspiring home (check out that home tour here!). Her goal was to create a simple, happy, and modern home for her client that didn’t detract from it’s gorgeous characteristics. Check out the full tour below!

Like what you did with the spice cabinet as well. Great job. Maybe I’ll try something at home as well. Inspiring to get more organized. Declutter your life. If you havn’t used something in a year donate it to someone who can use it!
