Monika Martin’s personal motto is a simple one: “live an inspired life”. Drawing inspiration from nature and from her own cozy and minimal space, Monika is the designer and owner of Zig Zag Studio Designs, a one-stop-shop for thoughtfully designed home goods. It immediately becomes clear that her own home is a reflection of her creative influences, as she sews a common thread of design sensibilities and goals through each of her goods. Monika strives to keep everything simple, acknowledging that interior decorating trends and personal preferences come and go with time.
Her passion for handmade, sustainable, and locally sourced products is what ultimately pushed her to create her own business, originally starting out as an Etsy shop selling pillows and poufs, and remains the main driving element in her creativity. Now, she finds great success in Zig Zag Studio, expanding it to its own retail website with pillows, ottomans, artwork and more. At home, she pours a huge amount of her efforts into shopping only eco-conscious furnishings and decor that are inspired by nature, including many west elm pieces that are Fair Trade Certified, FSC-Certified, hand-crafted, and local.
Monika’s personal life is busy (and at times chaotic!), with 2 very active boys and their family dog, Teddy. Monika and her husband moved from Minneapolis a decade ago and have found zen in this 4-bedroom home in DC that she’s slowly designed to become the perfect space for their family. “I strongly believe in simplicity, creative living and meaningful decorating”, Monika says. “My husband and I moved to the D.C area a decade ago from Minneapolis and we love it here. We have two active and fun boys that keep us busy and a puppy named Teddy. Besides working and spending time with my family and friends we hike, read, travel and try to find zen in daily chaos of activities.”
Monika is not the typical trend-follower. In her words, “interior trends come and go, but your personal style remains.” She does admit that she will occasionally change the color palette depending on mood and the season.
“I have been always drawn to light and bright rooms as much as eco friendly designs. The main inspiration is taken from right outside the window – nature. We wanted wooden floors, wool rugs, sheepskin and an open feel.”
When asked what her aesthetic goals were for her home, she responds that simplicity and comfort were her main drivers. “We choose furniture that is eco friendly, that is why we have inherited and repurposed furniture. We also like wood pieces that come from well managed environments and fair trade supporters.”
“We love our cozy reading corners and family room where we spend a lot of time together!”
