Selling all your belongings to travel the world is not usually the first thing that comes to mind when you’re in need of some money-saving. Though for Hailey Andresen, her husband Zack, and their two-year old son Owen, this is exactly what they did. Having lived in Brooklyn for nearly two years, the couple needed time away from it all to save a little cash and to focus on their careers. For Hailey, this meant building upon her popular lifestyle/motherhood blog, Household Mag. As a new mother, interior designer, podcaster, writer, stylist, and food lover, she took this opportunity of downsizing and decluttering to focus entirely on this business endeavor full time.

With all the freedom and time away, however, the couple reaffirmed that Brooklyn truly was their home. The couple returned to NYC after many months on the road, ready to settle in and call a place home again for a while. Starting with a blank slate, Hailey was able to be decidedly choosey when it came to what was allowed in to their new space. We were able to tour her space and talk with her about how she recreated her new nest in Brooklyn. Read on below!

“This past May, my husband went freelance and we traveled the world for the remainder of 2017 with our son, Owen. We did this mostly to cut down our living expenses, (yes, traveling the world was cheaper than living in NYC) while we each built out our businesses and it worked! While we were away, we learned so many valuable lessons, but most importantly, we learned that Brooklyn is in fact home. This January, we made our way back and are building a nest. Again.”

Hailey explains that keeping her space feeling clean, minimal, comfortable, and inviting was at the forefront of their priorities for this new space. “When we left to travel last May, we sold all of our belongings and downsized to two travel backpacks and our son’s stroller. This obviously made jumping from country to country much easier, but it also provided us with a little extra cash to make our travels that much more comfortable. When we made the choice to return to the states, we started from scratch with belongings.” Starting from scratch, she explains, was oftentimes an exercise in patience for her: “I’m the person that’s typically flattening moving boxes and hanging art on the walls the night we move in somewhere!”

“After so much bouncing around we are really ready to live in one space for an extended period of time. Often times, New Yorkers jump from apartment to apartment each year, but we wanted things to be different for our family. We made it a goal to find a space that suited our family today, but still gave us the opportunity to grow down the road.”

When asked what her favorite aspect of her new space is, Hailey says “maybe it’s because we lived in AirBnB’s for the majority of last year, but this is the homiest home we’ve ever lived in. We’ve always lucked out with our apartments in the past, but this is the first space I can see us living in long-term and that makes me really happy.”
