Each February, thousands of modern art and architecture lovers flock to the Southern California desert city of Palm Springs for Modernism Week – the ultimate celebration of modern architecture, design + culture. This year, west elm returned as an official sponsor, along with partner Acme House Company. Together, we worked to design the interior + exteriors of a classic Palm Springs home, this year in the El Mirador neighborhood. During Modernism Week, the home is on display for tours – and will become a vacation rental later in the year.
The Design Crew from west elm Palm Springs designed and executed the home transformation – from furniture, textiles and lighting selections, to wallpaper and paint color. Sun-lovers rejoice, as the location comes equipped with a brand-new pool, hot tub + tanning shelf, as well as a fully remodeled casita pool house just steps away from this backyard oasis. And yes, throughout the home are Sonos, the Wi-Fi-enabled sound system that brings the space to life with streaming music. Included in the design are outdoor murals by Shawn Savage + Robert Landry, contemporary art by Richard Prescott + Bryan Boomershine, and photography pieces by Ryan Chesla. All artists included in the home are local to the Palm Springs area.
“Modernism Week is the biggest celebration of Mid-Century architecture and lifestyle in Palm Springs,” says west elm Palm Springs Shopkeeper Wyndal Chapital. “It was very important for us to find an authentic way to engage with the community and celebrate what makes our town unique. The house tours, parties, and water show allowed many people to see our product in a different setting other than inside the store—and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. We love finding ways to genuinely relate to our community, leaving a positive mark on our city, its residents, and its visitors.”
