Few spaces can pull off the level of bright, airy, eye-catching (and Instagram-ready!) qualities of Ashley Kim‘s Gilbert, Arizona home. With no corner or tabletop left out of her design process, Ashley has curated her space to include feelings of both coziness and breathability, with a little Southwestern flair. Ashley and her husband are both full-time photographers, their creativity is on display in large-scale prints of her native California and Arizona desert landscapes. “The huge print above our couch is a film photo that was taken in Joshua Tree by my husband a year ago. Other than it being a pretty landscape photo, it actually has meaning to me. Every time I look at it, it takes me back to that specific moment walking around the quiet desert at sunset with Daniel while holding a 6 month old Emmy.” Recognizing the importance of adding personal elements throughout their home, she explains that the dining room table & chairs belonged to her grandparents. She hopes that by investing in quality pieces, even their newer furniture will continue this tradition and be passed down to her daughter Emmy.
Their home wasn’t move-in ready from the get-go. Despite only being 10 years old in a Suburban area, the home didn’t quite fit their aesthetic. “When we bought the house, the walls were beige, the cabinets were a dark brown, and the floor was carpet and tile, which are all very typical characteristics of newer homes in Arizona. Since this style didn’t feel like us, we had all the walls and cabinets painted white and put in new flooring before moving in. Most of our furniture in the main living areas have warmer tones by nature, since they are wood and leather, so having bright white walls helps balance that out.” Ashley’s favorite part of their finished home are the open floor plan and bright light from every direction. We couldn’t agree more! Take a closer look at Ashley’s space below:

“I am a full time wedding photographer with my husband. He’s been shooting digital and film photography now for a decade, and I joined the business over 4 years ago. I’m originally from California, and we met in college in Arizona where he is originally from. We had our first baby a year and a half ago so when we’re not working, we spend all of our time with her and family, while also traveling as much as possible.”
“I would describe our personal style as modern, casual, and minimalist with a southwestern vibe. Our bedroom definitely has a minimalist vibe with the furniture and walls being white, which I love for the calming effect.”
“My favorite things about our home are both the open floor plan and the natural light in the main living areas. Our house is a bi-level home. To reach our front door, you walk up a stoop and then once you enter the house, you are standing on a landing. One short flight of stairs leads up to the top floor; another short flight of stairs leads down. Since the areas where we hang out the most (our kitchen, living area, and master bedroom) are all upstairs instead of downstairs and have a lot of windows, there is always a ton of natural light in these rooms”.
“We always try to keep our space as clean and tidy as possible. My husband and I both work from home, so having a visually clean and clutter-free space is important to us. But, ever since having our baby 1.5 years ago, things have definitely changed! She has a designated area for her toys, but of course they still end up everywhere. We’ve learned to embrace this as it’s important for a baby to be able to play in and explore her own home (and she won’t be this age forever!). This just means I’m putting things away and cleaning up throughout the day now more than ever!”
