Ask any interior designer what the most important element in a client/designer relationship is and they will likely tell you trust. This can take many forms, whether it is clear communication about the client’s needs and tastes or, in some instances, a full transfer of the reigns over to the designer. The latter is a less likely scenario, but one that many a designer might relish as an opportunity to turn a full vision into a reality. This is what happened for Salt Lake City-based designer Mikelle Mabey when she was hired to transform a client’s 1950s Rambler.

A gut renovation, Mikelle was brought in when the home was reduced to its studs. “The nice thing about this client was he allowed me to choose everything from the wall colors, cabinets, and counters down to the decor without questioning one thing,” Mikelle says. Able to truly realize her vision for the space, she chose to emphasize the home’s Mid-Century simplicity by going with a distilled color palette of neutrals, blacks, and whites. “My idea was for this place to be very clean and crisp,” she notes. The final result is a space that is spacious, airy, and sophisticated while still feeling like a home. Take a closer look below!

So beautiful and restrained! What is the kitchen cabinet color? Looks like the palest of gray.
