Ask West Elm: How To Mix And Match Pillows

If there is one tried and true way to instantly upgrade a room without breaking the bank, it’s pillows. Available in literally hundreds of options, mixing and matching pillows can bring personality even to the most drab and seemingly hopeless of spaces. Just how to mix and match is an entirely different question, though! Instagram user @awilkes826 asked us,

“How do you dress up beige couches with fun pillows? Pattern mixing eludes me.”

Check out these 3 simple solutions below to take your mix-n-match game to the next level!

1. Monochrome Mix

One great way to bring life to your sofa without overwhelming it is to stick with a singular color palette. Here, we chose a deep blue color and brought in variety in the form of patterns and texture. A neutral-colored Mongolian Lamb pillow grounds the layout, bringing in its own exciting texture without conflicting with the existing color scheme.

2. Harmonious Contrast

To create a stronger visual punch, integrate two contrasting colors. Here, we chose a navy blue and a bright, neon pink. Use brighter colors like neon as a solid accent and bring in pattern with the more subdued color.

3. Go big or go home!

There are ways to make a big, bold statement without crossing over into clash-ville. To do this, we paired our two base colors—navy blue and neon pink—with neutrals and metallics, options that can play nicely with just about anything! Push bolder colors to the background and allow patterns to come to the front.

I’m interested in the mid-century bookshelf- tall side. I want to know if it is white laquer and does it require assembly?

I am looking for smaller pillows…..please. The 18″ and 20″ seem to go to the floor in order to sit comfortable. The smaller sizes are available on pinterest but the inserts are hard to come by. I would love to order 3 in a space where one large 20″ was. Greater mix of color.
