West Elm - Leah Duncan Studio, photographed by Arden Wray

When Leah Duncan moved to Austin in 2008, she quit her day job as a graphic designer for an advertising firm and went back to the drawing board (quite literally) in search of something more creatively fulfilling. She began creating drawings, typically inspired by nature and the southern locations she has called home for much of her life, and began selling them on various online marketplaces. The rest, as they say, was history. “I was able to gain a following,” Leah says. Today, her business has expanded from drawings to include prints, calendars, home goods, and screen printed textiles. We recently sent portrait photographer Arden Wray to Leah’s home studio to catch up with the maker and document a behind-the-scenes look at her creative process. Take a peek below!

Leah Duncan’s work is part of the west elm LOCAL assortment at west elm Austin, Dallas, Houston Highland Village, and Houston City Centre.
