West Elm - Mid-Century Modern Dallas Home

When graphic designer Emily Holt and her husband moved into this charming Dallas ranch house in 2013, they wanted to make the space their own—or as much their “own” as they possibly could. As renters, the couple couldn’t do much in the way of renovations and permanent changes, so they opted to let color, style, and décor dictate the tone of each space. A self-proclaimed mid-century addict, Emily brought a mixture of vintage and vintage-style pieces to the home, mixing in bright colors and bits of retro ephemera to give it a sense of lighthearted charm. “Our main goal for this house was to create a really comfortable, mid-century-inspired space but with tons of color and art throughout,” Emily says. “We have lots of creative friends and family, and we are always trying to find more space to hang prints and photos! We can’t do much else than paint, so we rely really heavily on our furniture and decor to do the heavy lifting to show our taste.”

“Our living room is home to our gallery wall, which is covered in art from friends, family, and local artists,” Emily says. “I love that it’s the first thing people see when they walk into our house. I have a huge bookcase full of design and film books, vinyl toys, and miscellaneous decor from all over, including West Elm. My husband works in the film industry, so a comfy couch near the TV is a must for us. We host a lot of watching parties in this room, so this couch has seen its days.”

“The living room flows right into the dining area, where we have the Mid-century Expandable Table. It’s a little tight, but it’s perfect with the leaf in to host dinner parties! One of the first things we did when we moved in was replace the terrifying iron & glass chandelier with this modern, wooden pendant light. Gotta love those Edison bulbs!”

“Since we live in a pretty small space, our additional sitting room also functions as my office. I keep it pretty simple, so I don’t get too distracted while I’m working. When we first moved in, this entire room was painted masking tape yellow, so that was the first thing to go. Nothing creative is going to happen in a masking tape yellow room, let’s be real. We were lacking a coffee table in this room for a while, so I was so stoked to get that Spindle Coffee table on sale last year!”

As a mid-century modern lover myself I love what you’ve done here. It just highlights what a consistent theme flavored with a personal sense of style can do for your living space – even if its a rental! Nice work.

Hi, which size dining table is shown here? Small or medium? I am debating between the two and wanted to see visuals.

Love this!! If you’re ever looking for another DFW home to photograph, my friends Aaron and Tate are incredible interior decorators and their house literally looks like an eclectic piece of art. I love being there! Here’s their website if you want to take a looksie: https://hollingsworth-co.com/
