The bedroom should be more than just a room where you sleep — it should be the place where you feel most comfortable, a place that inspires you when you wake up and relaxes you when you get home.

Nicole Griffin, partner at Hazel & Pine, photographer of all things beautiful, wanted her bedroom to be more than just a bedroom. So she transformed her sleep space into a personal sanctuary, drawing on inspiration from the outdoors — essentially bringing the outside in.

Read on to see what inspired Nicole’s space and how she incorporated it into her new bedroom.

What were the inspirations for your new bedroom?

While I am forever grateful for the artistic community of LA and constantly intrigued by the energy of the city, it’s the moments of solitude spent in the great outdoors that fuel my creative inspiration.

What was your goal when designing the space?

My goal in my bedroom makeover was to create an indoor oasis that brings the outside in. I wanted the space to create the same peace in my heart that the vast open spaces of the rolling majestic mountains of the Cascades, the muted tones of Seattle and desolated desert of California provide.

The perfect anchor to these handpicked pieces and family heirlooms is the mid-century modern line. The clean simple lines and natural acron wood allow for the space to feel warm while still light and airy. The dressers and nightstands are now home to some of my most beloved pieces that have been passed down from my grandparents or found while hunting the local flea markets.

How do you feel about the outcome of your new bedroom?

My room now feels like an expression of me and one that I am truly at home in, not to mention I now never want to get out of the world’s most comfortable bed. My favorite time of day in my new room is the ever so coveted California golden hour when the warm rays seep in behind my grandfather’s globe and slowly move across the room. Each little adorned piece that was curated over time lights up and it’s a beautiful reminder to stop in the moment and take this beautiful ride in.
