It started on a dreary Texas Wednesday. I had the itch to travel someplace out of the ordinary. Someplace I’d never been before. I knew that my old friend (and style guru) Taylor Bennett lives in rural Louisiana, so I announced that I would be taking a road trip from Texas to his town of Ruston, LA that very week.

Taylor is one of those who friends who is always happy to see you, even when you show-up in the middle of the night with a hyper dog. His house can be summed-up in one word: collected. Every item has a purpose and a story attached, from the vintage chairs to the original art over the mantel.

I asked Taylor to describe his style. His response: “Find the big pieces you love then the small things will find their way into place.”

My visit was a total surprise. But Taylor rose to the task at hand and announced that he was going to throw a dinner party to show me what Louisiana is all about.

The day started with Taylor’s cry: “To the chickens!” Yes chickens. Taylor has a talent and that’s chicken whispering. We went out to gather the eggs from his flock with swift hands and the colors were beautiful. We spent the rest of the morning and afternoon cooking and setting up for the dinner. All day long, Taylor’s friends came in to bring plates of homemade food, vessels of flower, and good conversation.

I was always told that being truly southern means having your table ready for anyone, even for a wandering traveler. Like a true southern host, Taylor had filled his home with people and laughter and more than I could possibly eat. Take a look.

Taylor’s house is amazing! I love his attention to details. Everything looks perfectly placed and in order. I could definitely live there… or just stop in for a visit!

Thanks for sharing! I am a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana-your story of Taylor as well as the photos provided paints a picture of days gone by-when things were simple & people were very hospitable.
