Imagine fitting your entire living room and home office into one 100-sq-ft space.

Impossible? Dabito of Old Brand New makes it look easy.

He recently moved from Los Angeles to a shotgun home in New Orleans with a tiny living room, but Dabito styled his way out of a tight spot, transforming it into an astoundingly comfortable and multi-functional space.

Read on for Dabito’s 5 essential small living room decorating tips and make any little space feel bigger and better.

Awesome small living room transformation in New Orleans | west elm

Awesome small living room transformation in New Orleans | west elm

1. Go low + leggy.

When you have a small space, pick furniture that sits low to the ground, like this coffee table. It will make your ceilings feel higher.

Choosing leggy furniture also makes any room feel airer, because pieces like these take-up less visual space.

2. Go BIG.

Even with a small space, sometimes you have to go big. Start with large pieces and work around them. Dabito went with an 8×10 wool rug which is almost the size of his entire living room. It grounds the space and actually makes it feel bigger.

3. Walls are your best friends.

Dabito uses a modular system to store his books, cameras and tchotchkes all the way to the ceiling. He added a small desk component to make the system more functional, and painted the brackets gold so it doubles as an eye-catching statement peice.

4. Art and mirrors.

Add art and mirrors, and you create visual interest in your small space. The only problem is that art can be expensive and hard to find. Dabito turns to magazines to discover frame-worthy art.

5. There’s always room for plants.

There is always room for plants in any space. No worries if you don’t have a green thumb. Dabito buys single palm leaves from the floral shop and puts them in vases like this one. These stems can last for a few months if you change the water and snip the ends weekly.

This looks cluttered :/

January 20, 2015

Where did he find the basket that the big tropical tree plant is placed in?

January 20, 2015

Lovely as always, Dabito. The yellow door is so pretty.

January 20, 2015

I love it! What color was used for the walls and trim?

January 20, 2015

I love Dabito’s “gathered” style – its timeless, homey and feels like a personality explored in decor. It’s nice to see a room decorated without a style or colour theme when we are bombarded by these things right now. Hope to see more of his work here in the future!

January 21, 2015

LOVE it, especially all the textures–so bold and innovative to have so many items in a small space. In a way makes it feel larger!

January 21, 2015

He is going to wish he had the original fan back when it becomes hot again. 7-9 months out of the year in New Orleans.

Love this, wonderful use of small space.

January 21, 2015

I liked the color of the before. warm, cozy

January 21, 2015

Very smart, classy, invigorating, and practical.

January 22, 2015

What color paint was used in the first photo? Like a brown

January 22, 2015

I think it has too many large plants.

January 22, 2015

Love it!

January 22, 2015

Great job love the art advice.

January 22, 2015

Just awesomme

January 22, 2015

Nice! This is helpful. Especially since it looks like the typical city rowhouse around here.

January 22, 2015

Where does he sleep?

January 22, 2015

If that rug is really 8×10 I don’t see how this space is only 100sf.

It would be convenient (and smart) to provide links to the westelm products – I’d love to see the overhead light fixture for sale on the site.

January 23, 2015

Hi Nancy! You can shop products by clicking on the individual photos, the “shop the look” at the top of the page, or the “featured” section at the bottom of the page. The light fixture is a “vintage” west elm piece from circa 2012. You can see all our currently available chandeliers here! Hope this helps.

January 22, 2015

Nice room I like the old furniture patterns.

January 22, 2015

Sorry, but this looks very messy/cluttered for such a small space. I think you chose too many popping colors… instead of having 1 or 2 that would draw your eye’s attention, having so many created and overwhelming effect.

January 22, 2015

What a great space! Love it all, especially the pittie mixes!

January 23, 2015

You did an outstanding job by utilizing every inch of your space, well done even down to those beautiful dogs…

January 23, 2015

I love absolutely EVERYTHING about this living room and seeing the before picture really shows how you can transform a space! I don’t normally like white walls, but it seriously works with all the bright and colorful elements. And I LOVE the use of plants! Bravo. I am a fellow graphic designer out of Baltimore!

January 23, 2015

Fabulous! If I sent you a photo of my small living room/kitchen combo… would you give me some suggestions? I know, that’s a lot to ask, but I need help!! πŸ™‚

January 23, 2015

Love the transformation & the furniture especially the side table with the coffee table books! Where can I find this? Overall, looks to be a very cozy, bright, welcoming & cheerful home !

January 23, 2015

I think it looks awesome.

What brand is the light fixture?

January 23, 2015

Ah, just saw the answer in the expanded comments. Bummer.

Too cluttered looking. Like the color scheme but I believe it would have looked better with less nick nacks and wall hangings

January 23, 2015

Something does add up. If the room is 100sq feet that would be 10×10 or any combination there of. They say the rug is 8×10, that would leave only 2ft on the width since the other side is 10′. Then there is a desk and another rug under it, clearly having more than 2′ left.

January 23, 2015

Absolutely love the way this space came together. So full of texture and beauty. Im not at all a fan of white walls, but this is absolutely the exception. So good. Loved seeing it come together on the IG takeover

JAIME β€” The basket the philodendron is in is from World Market.

January 23, 2015

NANCY and LOUISE β€” You guys are absolutely right. That was a test and you guys passed. Haha. My apologies for the confusion. I totally eyeballed the space before and it’s really a little under 130 sq.ft.

Nancy β€” The pendant light is no longer available. I bought it a couple years ago. Everyone’s in love with it so hopefully they’ll bring it back? Their new mobile pendant is similar and is quite nice, too.

January 23, 2015

January 24, 2015

I love it!!! πŸ˜‰

January 24, 2015

I agree with Amanda, it looks a bit cluttered. Maybe removing the plant from on top of the console and the plant by the window would make the room look more open.

January 24, 2015

Where can I find the black ceiling lamp?

January 25, 2015

What is the square thing, framed next to the door, then hidden by the cabinet in the ‘after’ picture? Nice work, very impressive!

January 27, 2015

This looks cozy and comfortably lived-in.

January 29, 2015

JULES β€” Thanks so much! Glad you like it. The frame you see next to the door is our mail slot. Our mail typically falls on the floor when the mail person drops it in so now it just sits under the console.

January 30, 2015

Love it. Looks warm and inviting. Nice visual balance in a small space. I like the overhead lighting, but wonder why one would replace a ceiling fan in New Orleans.

January 30, 2015

Great use of color and mix of textures!!!

January 30, 2015

Great work! Can you tell me the source of the overhead light? Thanks!

January 30, 2015

I love this space. It’s beautiful, colorful and comfortable! Gorgeous!

January 31, 2015

One of the main things that made this room look so much bigger is painting the wooden framework around door, windows and ceiling the same color of the walls. great idea!

January 31, 2015

What a great blog post! Rare for a brand to have such good content – love this, west elm!

January 31, 2015

I want to live here. Airy, inviting and fun!

February 1, 2015

Wow! Love the colors and layout and the mix of fabrics and textures…. The plants make the space feels so large! Pls post what shade/mfr of yellow yr door is painted….

February 1, 2015

I love orange print where can I find

February 2, 2015

could use a good edit, feels cluttered. but inches from stardom.

February 2, 2015

What an ingenious use of space and color! I have to disagree with Amanda – the room looks vibrant and interesting, not cluttered at all!

February 2, 2015

Love it! Painting the brackets on the modular system was brilliant! And I love the idea for finding art. Questions about the plants – Are all the larger plants in the space real? ….and, what is a designers take on using fake plants? is it a no-no? or ok?

February 2, 2015

love the print of all the parishes in Louisiana!

February 3, 2015

KIRSTEN β€” All the plants are real. I recommend the the philodendron selloum, rubber tree plant, and snake plant. They’re some of the best and hard to kill indoor plants. I am all about real plants but if the fake plants look super real, then why not? Thanks for commenting!

February 9, 2015

February 18, 2015

It looks so much bigger than the before picture. The shelving unit reminds me so much of the shelving system my dad used on our living room walls to hold his reel to reel tape deck and other stuff. What goes around comes around! Love the dogs!

Julia Kristina

February 18, 2015

This is a really lovely space. The yellow door is a bit much for my taste, but it works well in the room with the other pops of yellow accent.

February 18, 2015

beautiful and surprising transformation! where is the fiddle leaf fig’s blue planter/yellow stand from?

February 18, 2015

There’s just too much STUFF and a few too many styles going on here. I’m all for mixing and matching but this looks like a mish mash mess of flea market finds.

February 18, 2015

If the rug is 8×10 this room is much larger than 100sq ft.

February 19, 2015

Cheerful space, but he went a little too crazy with the plants.

February 20, 2015

Can’t belive you fit so much in!

February 20, 2015

The space actually looks bigger after. I love the assortment of colours, it has given me lots of tips.

February 21, 2015

I think this is a really cool space

February 21, 2015

Wow, what a great change! I love the door color too. I live in a very small apt… I’ll steal a few of your ideas. I don’t see clutter, I see life

February 21, 2015

I like this. I got some good ideas for my own small living room and office. Please tell me what the striped, fringed shawl is hanging on– the one that is hanging on the wall at the end of the book shelves. Thank you.

I think he did an amazing job with such a small space. Things aren’t match matchy but everthing still flows well. Finally a small space that’s really small. Great job.

February 23, 2015

What color did he use on the walls?

February 24, 2015

This is the kind of space I love. It looks like the home of a happy person. I could imagine myself sitting down, having a cup of tea and admiring all the art, plants, petting those wonderful dogs and having a great conversation with the owner. I have two words for him “well done!”

March 4, 2015

It’s a cluttered mess, in a small place you what things that actually have a function in everyday living, not useless silly objects. Less is more.

March 6, 2015

I love your space.very clever styling.Love everything about it! Really.very comfortable look that really does not have that styled look.

March 9, 2015

For a small space on a budget, it’s fabulous. It’s attractive and layered and functional. Dabito, you’re extremely talented! You’ll go far.

March 10, 2015

The room may be too cluttered for some tastes, but it appears spacious to me. Your eye sees through things because of the “legginess,” and there’s a kind of unity. Actually, that’s the only part I don’t like so much: the blandness that helps create space leaves a color vacuum. I think that helps it be masculine. It’s a very pleasant room. The dogs are too big…maybe trade them in for dachsunds. (joke! joke!)

March 10, 2015

I love this look…cozy and airy with much to enjoy!

March 24, 2015

Wow. It definitely looks bigger. The long sofa is great. I like the brightness of the room. And I like the colors throughout. You have great style.

March 25, 2015

This is nowhere near cluttered. It’s more human than modern design… which often doesn’t look like anyone even lives there. I find modernism sterile, institutional, soulless – not what i want for my everyday environment! I like having something to look at besides blank walls and white everything. Have these people never read 1984….

Mrs. T

March 25, 2015

I loved this small living room. The window and door placements made the room easier to decorate. I spotted the 1960’s pieces–which were stylish and built well.

March 26, 2015

For a moment I thought this was my house in NOLA. The front door and window are the same. It’s easy to clutter up a space like this and the layering seems excessive. That being said, I have tried to pare back as well. I do like the plants though and the stands they are on.

The Finder

April 21, 2015

Love your pics, and your taste…..the plants were gorgeous….I am an artist of sorts, I love to collect old things and repurpose them…..I just don’t have the space to do it, and/or tools, saws, etc., but I found a company that warehouses construction materials for contractors, they don’t sell, they just handle the materials off site of the building area….and they have thousands of hardwood pallettes, also spools that they use for wires, little ones to huge magnificent pieces….I got lost and they have given me free reign to take whatever I wanted, I don’t have enough space to house it all…..but boy do I have ideas for repurposing these items….I am building a bed first for an oversized man……and I am so excited about it, just thinking of the possibilities……makes me happy! I love colors and fabric, so I will have fun this summer redoing my entire living area…..walls and furniture alike. I have some way out ideas, but you have inspired me to do more……hey you only live once, might as well enjoy it and live it to the fullest!, oh by the way I am almost 75 years old and I am known as The Finder.

April 21, 2015

Come to my house Dabito! I have a small 11×11 room that is my husband’s man cave, and it really is a dark dreary cave! Big brown leather furniture, big TV, big TV cabinet, only one full size wall where the TV hangs. HELP!

April 24, 2015

What a beautiful space full of exciting textures and objects. The sprinkling of living plants make the space feel very intimate and safe. I love it! Nice job Dabito! You have a great eye for design.

April 28, 2015

Looks cozy to me.

April 28, 2015

Love it! It’s so clean-looking and airy and has great functionality at the same time. I can’t believe someone called it cluttered! Do they understand that it is 10 X 10? The white walls and yellow door make a great background for a well-curated collection of functional and decorative items. Love the couch and coffee-table! Great job, Dabito!

April 29, 2015

Pretty dang cool! I LOVE that coffee table and the ample size. It doesn’t look cluttered, but I have less stress when it comes to spacial phobias. The yellow door is genius! I’m helping my parents decorate their 2-bedroom retirement home. This is going on the inspiration board.

May 1, 2015

May 6, 2015

What a great use of space! Your eye is amazing! Too often, you see pictures of a space that is only pretty and not functional. This room shows you’re doing life. Very nice, good tips! Calling this “cluttered” is incorrect. This is a space someone actually lives in, not one of those sterile Architectural Digest photo shoots.

July 11, 2015

I got a Bigger basket yet at the thrift store and at check out I was told it was 1/2 price!!! Lucky find!!!

July 11, 2015

I like the pieces he chose, does look bigger that way. Like that he is a doggie lover!! I was wondering what that small square is by the front door?? I learned from this, will use some of these ideas myself.

July 12, 2015

Dabito, I think you did a wonderful job with everything. I will remember to get plants and make use mirrors and floating bookshelves. Thanks for your decor for small spaces.

July 23, 2015

The optical illusion with the paint (walls and trim same color, front door another color) really adds height to the room. I had to look at it a few times. Brilliant!

July 25, 2015

With the Vases, it bring in the Beauty , I’m a love of Vases . The cans of every day uses are Beautiful and the Palm leaf bring in the Nature of Beauty ….

July 30, 2015

I like most of this but wondering why the window treatments don’t extend as close to the ceiling as possible. It would make the ceiling seem so much higher! Also, I believe that some of the less-frequently used items over the desk could go into baskets, on the shelves that are already there. Would help relieve some of the visual clutter. Lastly, I think that the floor lamp needs to be taller. (See pics 1,2 & 5 for photos of this). If a new one’s not in the budget, something sturdy could be placed under the existing lamp to act as a riser.

I’m really loving the front door, though!!!

August 21, 2015

What is the square footage of your living room.? I am moving to in-law quarters, with a total of 500 sq ft. Have a beautiful arm chair and ottoman (multicolor) mostly red flowers and like a khaki color ottoman. Also, I have a very nice brown queen bed. Old fashioned looking. Any suggestions for sofa color and small dining table and chairs. I need all the help I can get. ( Just turning 73 years young) I want my little house to be beautiful and with simple designs. Thank you for all your help.

Dabito, beautiful! I love it! As a New Orleans shotgun owner, this is perfect. We have small (tiny?) living spaces, and there’s no choice but to put more in them. Cluttered? Oh well. We do what we can. Maybe you can help me with my living room! πŸ™‚
