Christmas time in Sydney means lazy summer days by the beach, and drinking cocktails with sand still on your feet. Interior stylist Sibella Court drew on her childhood memories of 1970s summer beach culture when designing Old Joe’s, a new bar and diner in the Sydney beachside suburb of Cronulla. Take a look!
“I wanted it to be an extension of bringing the outside in and I delved into my own upbringing and beach culture of the 1970s for inspiration: stripy umbrellas, washed-out Okanui board shorts, tasselled terry towelling and ice-cream at the end of a salty day.”
The space incorporates sunny sorbet colours, including custom-printed upholstery linen by Bonnie and Neil, west elm’s Mosaic Tiled tables and gorgeous handpainted murals inspired by retro milk bar signage. It’s the perfect setting to enjoy southern American-inspired eating (think lobster rolls and ribs) with an old-school cocktail or an ice-cream spider – not forgetting the obligatory game of ping-pong.
