We’re falling hard for Savannah this season, so we asked our pals at the city’s AlleyCat Lounge to share a drink that celebrates this Georgia locale. “The only drink truly native to Savannah,” reads the restaurant’s cocktail menu, “is this classic punch recipe, which was reported by the Augusta Chronicle as being so potent that, ‘As a vanquisher of men, it’s equal has never been found.'” Local history points to George Washington’s visit to Savannah in 1791 as cause for the drink’s creation, its name a reference to the oldest military unit in Georgia. As legend has it, Washington awoke the day after drinking the cocktail with such a severe hangover that he swore never to return to Savannah (he never did). So, with that, we say cheers (and drink responsibly)!
