What could be more Australian than wishing your sweetheart (or your single friends) a “happy bloody valentine’s day” with the pun-perfect gift to match? We here in the west elm Australia office took inspiration from an idea by Molly from Almost Makes Perfect (see the original post here) and added our own cheeky Aussie twist, for a one-of-a-kind Valentine.

We turned our DIY fun into a pre-Valentine’s craft party. To do the same, you’ll need:


INGREDIENTS  (makes 2 standard drinks)

500 ml tomato juice
3 Tablespoons lemon/lime juice
2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 Tablespoons balsamic vinegar
2 teaspoons horseradish
2 teaspoons pickle brine (we like McClure’s Pickles)
Tabasco sauce, to taste
Sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper, to taste



Paper for printing labels
String or washi tape for securing labels

Measuring spoons
Mixing jug
Stirring spoon
Storage jar/bottle



Highball glasses
Celery, lemon slices, cherry tomatoes and green olives, for garnish


Print and cut out your labels, punching a hole if you’re going to hang it by thread or ribbon.

To make the mix, combine ingredients in a large jug, transfer to a Weck jar or similar, and seal. The mix is best served immediately but will keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Add your label just before you’re ready to present your mix. There are a few label options to choose from in our downloadable template

To serve, pour the mix over highball glasses filled with ice and a shot of vodka. Garnish with a stick of celery, a slice of lemon and a toothpick skewered with cherry tomatoes and green pitted olives. (We turned some extra labels into fun straw decorations by punching a hole in each end.)


Don’t forget to supply plenty of snacks + great music – and it never hurts to dress the part, too. Cheers!
