A new Before & After from our own Evan Schwartz — a Home Stylist in our DUMBO store. Small spaces are common in New York City and Evan helped a Midwest transplant make her Brooklyn studio warm and inviting with a place for everything she’d need…

My client is a midwest transplant and was excited about a sleek, modern Brooklyn apartment but wanted to keep it a homey and cozy, too.
Since the client was starting from scratch, it was important to cover the basics — a bed frame, storage, a place to relax, and a table to eat or work — all within the tight confines of a studio where the largest area faces the kitchen. She was so excited about the process and kept an open mind the whole time. We chose smaller-scale furnishings with a modern twist on traditional.

The art over the bed were things she’s collected from her travels and over time. Her main treasures were old family wedding portraits which we broke up between the entryway and surrounding the “bedroom.” Those are very dear to her and she wanted to be surrounded by them.

We hope to, at some point, paint an accent wall behind the bed to complete the space. My approach to this apartment was really no different than everything else I do in the way that I want to make sure the client loves coming home — and she does! We’re continuing to work together and now she’s ready for some accessories: a tray stand, floor lamp, pillows and throws!

Beautiful! It’s amazing how much personality and warmth Evan brought to this space. I didn’t even notice that it had such good bones (light, wood floors, etc.) until the after shots.

I love the eclectic collection of art above the bed, gives me inspiration to do something similar.

Where did you get the elephant with the colorful flowers art?

The room seems a little cluttered now and the mauve colored bedding seems to be throwing something off.

This bed needs a gray or black headboard, otherwise it looks unfinished. Don’t like the patterned print on the bed pillow. Should have had another matching purple sham and then add a few more patterned pillows to the bed. Also, don’t like the two different color drapes on the windows. Both windows should have the same print drapes to create some cohesion of the space since it’s a studio. Love the wall color, rug, arrangement of pictures on the wall, and furniture. The sofa needs a few colorful pillows with some purple in them to unite the bed color with the rest of the space.

WOW. People, it looks great, and is better than 94% could do even if we had the money. Also, using picture frames in lieu of a headboard is very popular. Very nice 🙂

Where’s the TV? Be realistic.

Too busy. I love working with decorators but I find that I need to restrain them. The “after” contains many elements of a wonderful room, but way too many and conflicting.

How much did this cost?

I do not own a television, so it is realistic to me. I would edit back a couple items though. It seems a bit too “cozy”.

Really personal to the client and that’s what is important.

Give me the old space before it was re-done. Simple is better! #interiordesigner’seye

How about a smokey gray tufted headboard (keying off of the foot trunk), and a larger bedside lamp — maybe something in an orange/red to POP off of the flower in bedroom elephant pic). Just sayin’…

Usually love all the transformations but this one seems a bit overdone. Too cluttered and now the space feels even smaller!

CUTE! …but you lost me at the 2 different pillow shams!! that’s just STRANGE! both mauve, or both pattern would be cool, but not one of each, looks off balance.

When you sit up in bed, you’ll hit the pictures! makes no sense. curtains and mismatched pillows also throw everything off.

I love your eclectic style EVAN. Its so NYC eclectic chic. The original lack luster apartment now feels lived in like a historic architecturally rich apartment. This is our living art! Job well executed. -danny t

I love this look! I got rid of my TV months ago and I wonder why people still keep around. Looking forward to redecorating with West Elm.
