Hometown artist Gentry Blackburn is teaching a session tonight with Craft Lake City on how to hand-stitch applique pillows! She gave us a preview, plus some tips and inspiration about how to create + customize your own felt pillows at home.
Hand-stitching is great for beginners and old pros alike. It can be amazingly intricate or incredibly simple. You don’t need a machine, you can work on a project anywhere and it has a great handmade folksy look.
Try not to keep your thread too loose or too tight, and mind that your stitches are evenly spaced. The web has a million examples of stitches and how-to’s and you local library will have lots of helpful books as well.
When I am learning a new craft such as knitting – I have to re-teach myself every few years – I head to the children’s department. Kids craft books have great simple guides and visuals!
If you’re in Salt Lake City tonight, there are still a few spaces left in Gentry’s class! Visit our SLC store’s Facebook page to register.
