FEATURED: Navy Stripe Sheet Set
WHY IT WORKS: When Emily Henderson transformed this bedroom, the goal was to create a bright and cheerful space for guests…

I love navy and yellow together. They are totally opposite on the color wheel, therefore making them oh so complementary. You have a really bright happy color mixed with the dark masculine grounding color, which keeps it balanced. The curtains have a lot of hot pink in them, so I peppered it around the room and it became this fun little poppy accent color.

Emily is sharing more of this transformation on her blog: Style by Emily Henderson | Guest Room Makeover. She includes many of her resources and tips for mixing patterns and colors. Check it out!

Really nice. I love your “before and afters”. They have given me lots of great ideas – I have no decorator abilities so I need all the help I can get! Thanks!

Very cute, fresh-looking room! It’s classic yet current.

But about the highlighted quote: “They are totally opposite on the color wheel … ” It’s simply inaccurate.

Blue and yellow are not opposite each other on the color wheel; blue and orange, and yellow and purple, are opposites, also know as complements. Blue and yellow, along with red (as in the reddish table and pink accents), are the primary colors, which is why this room looks so balanced, neither bold nor serene. Orange and blue, as true complementary colors, would have created an intentionally bold, energizing palette.
