For all the indoor gardening novices who need help keeping their leafy friends alive, we asked Carmen Devito of Groundworks Inc. and west elm Market’s Brooklyn Blend Potting Soil to create care sheets for 8 of her favorite houseplants. Use them to greenify your home this spring!
Name: The Snake Plant (Sansevieria)
Light: Low to High
Water: Low ( once every 2 weeks )
Care: Easy
The Sansevieria is a ubiquitous houseplant for good reason: You can’t kill it, except with kindness! Just DO NOT OVER-WATER, especially in the spring and summer seasons. The Snake Plant is also known as Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, and is a favorite food of African elephants. I love how architectural it looks, especially in the right container. If it is really happy it may even bloom for you!
A Note On Pets: Always check with your vet before bringing a new plant into your home.
Get a new houseplant guide from Carmen every week on the Front&Main blog!

Darling little guide to a great houseplant! I love this, and it’s perfect timing of course as I am just thinking about adding some new plants for spring. Thanks!

This is pretty. It would look good with my herb garden!

Thanks, I love mine but I must have over watered because some of the leaves got mushy and fell over. Perfect timing. Thanks for solving my problem!

Love this plant. Not sure I can have it with two kittens in the house. I’ll check the toxicity on felines.
Beware, too, that the roots of this plant are very strong. One of my grandmother’s pots exploded one day from the pressure of the roots.
