The team behind Hella Bitter makes fantastic small batch bitters right here in Brooklyn — and not surprisingly, they also know a thing or two about mixing a mean drink. Earlier this month, Hella Bitter came by our new Market store in Dumbo to teach a Skillshare class demystifying mixology. Here’s some of their bartender wisdom, and their excellent take on The Manhattan.
It’s hard to get more timeless than The Manhattan. We use both citrus and aromatic bitters to give this cocktail depth and a unique subtlety. It’s also so easy to customize! Like it on the sweeter side? Use your favorite Bourbon instead of Rye. Want it dry and almost savory? Use equal parts white and sweet vermouth. Want to go out on a limb? Replace the vermouth with Amaro, an Italian digestif, for a dark, spicy and bitter Manhattan that’s perfect for winter.
THE MANHATTAN
- 2 ounces Rye Whiskey
- 1 ounce Sweet Vermouth
- 1 dash Hella Bitter Citrus Bitters
- Stir ingredients gently and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a twist or cherry.
