4 Questions with Stephanie Shih of Desserts For Breakfast

What’s your favorite dish to bring to a Holiday potluck?
Between the cookie swaps and candy canes during the holidays, the sheer number of sweets out there is always a bit overwhelming for me, so I usually like to show up to a holiday potluck with something savory to balance out the sugar overload (even though I’m quite often teased about being the dessert maker who doesn’t actually bring dessert!). One of my favorite dishes to bring is a gorgonzola, pear, and balsamic honey galette, which hits just the right notes between sweet and savory.
Sweet Potatoes vs. Mashed Potatoes?
Mashed potatoes–hands down. And preferably with chives, cream, and butter. Or with garlic hummus mixed in, which is a version that a friend once brought to a Seder: it’s an unexpected preparation but absolutely delicious.
Favorite weird Thanksgiving leftover meal?
Gravy with mashed potatoes and pasta, with a side of peas and mint and a leftover bottle of apple cider. I’ve also always wanted to make a Thanksgiving pie, filled with layers of mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, turkey, gravy, and cranberry sauce, but we’ve yet to have enough leftovers for me to fulfill this vision!
What’s another blog that inspires your food POV?
One of my favorites is Poires au Chocolat by Emma Gardner. There’s a quiet sophistication to her desserts, and I’m obsessed with her scone recipe, eaten with mascarpone cheese and rhubarb jam, of course.
