“Life is in the details. Style Accordingly.” So says Cassandra LaValle, the founder of coco + kelley. Her style must be pretty good, too, since that once-small blog has exploded into a design studio and lifestyle website with contributors across the country. After featuring some of Cassandra’s favorite Fall picks in our catalog and online, we wanted to discover what else inspires the in-demand Seattleite.
coco + kelley just turned five years old! What inspires you to keep it going?
The fact that my blog gets to grow with me is what inspires me to keep going. That and the fabulous readers we have! I miss the days when blogging was a bit more interactive, but I love that many of my readers have been with me since day one! It’s amazing. And, it’s a fun challenge to find new ways of approaching old topics. The possibilities are endless!
How would you describe your personal style?
While I think many people might think of my style as glamorous, I actually enjoy living in a classic, well-edited, and comfortable space. And I like to dress in much the same manner!
It seems that you are a party-throwing master. What’s your favorite part about entertaining?
I love putting together fantastical tablescapes, but what I really love about entertaining at home is the intimacy of the setting. Whether it’s a table for two or a party of twenty, creating an environment that feels special and welcoming to guests is so rewarding. Throw in good food, wine and conversation, and a dinner party at home is pretty much my idea of bliss.
Gatherings can be unpredictable. Have any of yours really surprised you with how they turned out?
Recently I hosted a party for my closest friends and family in Seattle who have supported me over the past five years as I’ve built coco+kelley. I agonized over details as if it were my wedding, but in the end the part that surprised me the most was really the total joy and appreciation people had that evening. It was overwhelming.
When it comes to color, any current favorites?
I’m obsessed with a really deep, rich teal green. Greens in general are obviously my fave!
Have any coco + kelley posts been really unexpectedly popular or polarizing?
I’m always surprised by how much of a response I get from the more personal posts. When you’re talking about color and trends and design every day, you forget that part of what people love about blogs is the person behind them!
Please give us a taste of your most recent sailing adventure!
Oh my, it was a good one. A group of friends and I headed up to Desolation Sound – which is north of Vancouver – for a week on a 40′ sailboat. I completely unplugged and traded in skyscrapers, traffic and laptops for islands, open seas, and books! I learned a ton about sailing, shucked oysters fresh off the beach, and I came home with a refreshed perspective! I think it’s so important to feed our creativity and knowledge in new ways.
