A big “Hello” & “Welcome” to Kinfolk Magazine! The editors, contributors and photographers from Kinfolk will be regularly sharing their own unique perspectives on casual entertaining with us at west elm!
Sharing food is a core element of the relationships we have with loved ones, and simplifying these meals means we’re likely to have them more often. Making time to sit down for regular meals is challenging for those of us who face busy schedules, missing ingredients, and cryptic recipes. But when we loosen the stiff idea of “entertaining” to include a variety of more casual activities, we find it’s quite easy to spend time together, and that the easiest ideas — winter walks, playing cards, reading together, meeting for coffee — are often most enjoyable!
The concept of Kinfolk is simple: we’re focused on why we entertain. Kinfolk supplements existing cooking, entertaining, and recipe magazines by covering the reasons we do those things. We cut away the non-essentials and focus on what is most important: each other, our shared relationships, and great food (of course!).
Kinfolk is a growing community of artists with a shared interest in small gatherings. We recognize that there is something about a table shared by friends, not just a wedding or once-a-year holiday extravaganza, that anchors our relationships and energizes us. We have come together to create Kinfolk as our collaborative way of advocating the natural approach to entertaining that we love.
Every element of Kinfolk — the features, photography, and general aesthetics — is consistent with the way we feel entertaining should be: simple, uncomplicated, and less contrived. Kinfolk is the marriage of our appreciation for art and design and our love for spending time with family and friends.
The images above showcase these kinds of ideas, the simple activities to embrace as a couple.
