Mark Welsh and James Salaiz use clay, driftwood and a range of found objects to create one-of-a-kind, hand made pieces that both twist and glorify nature. The brand name Carter & Cunningham is an alliterative fusion of their mothers’ maiden names — Mark (Carter) Welsh and James (Cunningham) Salaiz.
Mark & James work from their studio on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. At only 225 square feet, the space amazingly functions as a showroom, too! For their outdoor collection for west elm they’ve created stylized ceramic owls (also for use indoors) and a citronella candlepot with a stamped swallow. James sculpted the owls that were used to produce the west elm collection.
